THE UEFA EURO 2020:

The UEFA Euro 2020, the most anticipated tournament in all Europe, is the competition in which European countries battle out for the cup. Unluckily, it could not take place in 2020 as it was suspended last year due to the pandemic. After matters settled down, FIFA allowed the competition to go forward, and the game commenced on Friday, 12th June as per the new schedule. The prevailing champions are Portugal who would love to have another cup run, and they are grouped with Hungary, Germany and France.

There are a total of 6 groups in the tournament namely:

These 24 teams will give their all for a spot in the knockouts after the group stages end. The top 2 teams in each group will qualify for the next round. However, the four best teams finishing up third in their groups will also be eligible to play in the Round of 16 knockouts.

The competition is very tough as leading teams such as Italy, Belgium, England, Netherlands, Croatia, Spain, Sweden, France, Germany and Hungary, will all try their level best to surpass Portugal, the Champions of Europe.

7 matches have been played so far, and we can see the excitement of football already, as the teams fight hard against one another for the victory:

1st Match: Turkey 0 – 3 Italy

The game took place at Stadio Olimpico and ended up as a one-sided match with the Italians overwhelming the Turks. Aside from the 2 goals secured by Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne, Turkey shamefully got an own-goal thanks to Turkish defender, Merih Demiral. The Italians could have ended up with a much better summary as they created 24 chances at the goal.

2nd Match: Wales 1-1 Switzerland

Baku Olympic Stadium observed a competitive match on Saturday, 12th June between the Welsh and the Swiss. Switzerland was on the attack and produced many chances including 12 corners, commanding the game for most of the time, but the Welsh back-line destroyed their chances with perfectly-timed interceptions. Breel Emboro scored one for Wales while Keiffer Moore placed one past the goalkeeper for the equaliser.

3rd Match: Denmark 0-1 Finland

The results were unexpected for Denmark as Finland’s only shot at the goal ended up as a loss for them. Joel Pohjanpalo pulled up the victory by scoring a goal for Finland in the 60th minute of the match and ensured 3 points for his nation. There were many shots attempted by Denmark but none could go beyond the Finnish Goalkeeper L. Hradecky. Christian Erikson fell during the game with reports saying he went through a cardiac arrest, but thankfully he is fine.

4th Match: Belgium 3-0 Russia

As the score-line suggests, the Belgians dominated Russia with Romelu Lukaku finishing with an amazing brace, having scored in the 10th and 88th minute of the event. Thomas Munier increased Belgium’s chances of winning by scoring in the 34th minute of the game. Statistically, Belgium’s tactics proved successful at Krestovsky Stadium, as they now lead in their group.

5th match: England 1-0 Croatia

This one was a thriller of a match, with 2 top sides confronting each other at the Wembley Stadium. It was a tough match for both teams, with equal attempts at the goal but Raheem Sterling set the tone of the match after scoring for England in the 57th minute of the contest.

6th Match: Austria 3-1 North Macedonia

At the National Arena, Austria was the better side scoring the 1st goal of the match in the 18th minute. The Macedonians responded with Goran Pandev’s goal after exactly 10 minutes. However, the game slipped through their hands in the second half, as Micheal Gregoritsch and Arnautović scored goals in the 78th and 89th minute of the match respectively, which led to Austria winning the game.

7th Match: Netherlands 3-2 Ukraine

This one was a very tight competition as both teams wanted the win eagerly. After a boring first half, both the teams displayed their potentials in the sensational second half of the match. Amsterdam Arena witnessed back-to-back goals from the Netherlands by Wijnaldum and Weghorst right after the second half started. Ukraine struck back with 2 goals in succession after the 70th minute. But the story was wrapped up after Dumfries delivered a powerful header inside the box, leading to the 3rd and final goal of the match in the 85th minute.

Till now, Romelu Lukaku is the leading goal scorer in the tournament after scoring a brace against Russia. There are many more exhilarating goals to come surely as Group E comes into action today at 9:00 pm, as Slovakia plays against Poland.
