The 2020 Euro will FINALLY take place! This one year delay for the competition has had consequences! Some prominent pros won’t be taking part in this challenge for various reasons… Here are 11 great players who will miss the Euro this summer.

1. Virgil Van Dijk

The Liverpool captain won’t be playing this year’s Euro as he ruled himself out of the tournament as a result of injury. He’s been out of action since October after getting tangled in a collision with Everton Goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, he suffered an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury in the process. The Dutch has made the decision to depart from the national team and is focusing on his rehabilitation programme, to make a quick comeback, putting in his club before country.

2. Sergio Ramos

Having 180 caps for his national team, the Spanish veteran has been excluded from the Spain Euro squad, due to a frustrating last season with Madrid. The 35-year-old gave a poor performance, and lead Madrid to a trophyless campaign for the first time since 2009-10. Spain boss Enrique explained: “Ramos has not been able to compete this season, he has not been able to train with the group.”

3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic

“The God’s” return didn’t prove out as successful, did it? After scoring 15 goals in 19 Serie A appearances, the striker picked up a knee injury against Juventus in May and since then, he has not been able to come out on the field. He could not finish the rest of the season and was not called up for the national side. As he approaches 40, he shows no intentions of giving up. The big question is: WHEN WILL HE RETIRE!?

4. Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard

These 2 young lads are the future of Norwegian football. Norway finished 3rd in their qualifying group behind Spain and Sweden so the striker and the midfielder had to take part in the knockouts in which they grievously lost 2-1 to Serbia. However, they would definitely be fancying their vacations.

5. Jesse Lingard

Lingard put his dark days behind him and got back to his best at West Ham United aka the Hammers. He almost got the London team to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in history! Unluckily, he was not included in the preliminary list of 33 players and ultimately got dropped out because of an injury. Sadly, he also won’t take part in the Euro this time.

6. Ansu Fati

18-year-old Fati has been an absolute sensation at Barcelona, breaking records from time to time and has legendary potential. But exhaustion and tiredness seriously injured his knee back in November 2020. Since then, he underwent surgery three times and hasn’t been able to recover to his full form yet and is struggling to deliver his best. Had he be fit now, we definitely would have seen him preparing for the Euro.

7. Oblak

The Atletico Goalkeeper will have some moment to rejoice in his Spanish Championship title. Knowing the fact that he’s one of the greatest Goalkeepers in Spain, he won’t be able to compete in the international tournament being held back by Slovenia’s poor results. After Slovenian Goalkeeper, Samir Handanović, retired from international football in 2016, Oblak has been the unchallenged starter but he still hasn’t played in any Euro or World Cup. Slovenia finished 4th in the qualifying stages of the tournament behind Poland, Austria and Northern Macedonia.

8. Marco Reus

It certainly isn’t a decision he would have taken readily, but Reus ruled himself out of the Euros, due to fatigue. “After a complicated, arduous and — thank God — ultimately successful season, I have decided along with the national team coach (Joachim Löw) not to progress to the Euros,” stated the 31-year-old. This would be the third important event in which he won’t be representing the Germans since his debut for the national side in 2011. He has been sidelined from these major international competitions mostly because of severe injury problems.

9. Marc-André ter Stegen

Following an inconsistent season with Barca this year, Ter Stegen decided to miss the competition as a result of a knee injury. “I’m very sad to miss Euro 2020 this summer with Germany. For the first time in many years, I’ll be a fan at home supporting my country. I believe that we can win,” said the 29-year-old.

10. Ricardo Pereira

The Portuguese right-back would be yearning to become part of the Euro. He would be cursing his luck having missed six games with injury for Leicester City. He was unable to replicate his performance in the 2021 Premier League as he struggled to engage in play. Therefore, Pereira’s name was not included in the final list of Portuguese footballers for Euro 2020.
